Senior Book Club. 11-noon. Book club participants meet at the Senior Center of Jackson Hole to discuss “House of Sand and Fog” by Andre Dubus III. Exhibit - Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey. Visit earth's coldest, windiest, highest (on average), driest and most remote continent - Antarctica. The Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibit "Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey" features 50 stunning photographs by Joan Myers and is on display from January 2 to March 2, 2007. Cost: Free. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible through the generous support of Quark Expeditions.

Registration Begins for Spanish Book Discussion: Malinalli, Real Woman and Mythical Figure. 7-8:30 p.m. Sign-up begins January 8 for a Spanish discussion of the book “Malinche” by Laura Esquivel. 11 January, Thursday
Opening Reception for Exhibition “Wondrous Cold: An Antarctic Journey.” Teton County Library celebrates this new exhibit with an opening reception from 6-7 p.m. Friends of the Library will provide ice-themed appetizers and snowball-inspired sweets. A listening station featuring “Antarctica: Austral Soundscapes” will invite visitors to take a sonic trip to this remote continent. Following the reception, watch the epic Antarctic survival story of Ernest Shackleton and his crew from the ship Endurance with a film screening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. of “Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure.”

17 January, Wednesday
Lunch ‘N Learn: Internet Tips and Tricks. 12-2 p.m. Rev up your Internet searching skills and learn keyboard shortcuts and expert Google features from Library Instructor Steve Whisenand. Book Discussion: Writing Wyoming. 7 p.m. Teton County Alta Branch Library invites readers to nestle in this winter with a few good books by joining this book discussion series, which begins with Wyoming author Mark Spragg’s book, “Where Rivers Change Directions.” Books available for participants beginning January 2. Movie: "Eight Below." 2-4 p.m. This Antarctic adventure reveals the incredible friendship between a sled dog guide and his dog team. The sled dogs learn to survive together while the guide struggles to return to Antarctica to rescue them. Rated: PG. For ages 5 and up. Cost: Free. Location: Ordway Auditorium. 20 January, Saturday
Experience Antarctica with Conrad Anker and Sam Lowe-Anker. 7:30-8:30 p.m. Professional mountaineer Conrad Anker – who retraced the steps of Ernest Shackleton and who was a member of the first team to summit Vinson Massif from a new east route – revisits the continent through a slideshow lecture. Following his father’s talk, Sam Lowe-Anker, screens his 10-minute, award-winning environmental film “Antarctica.” Cost: Free. Location: National Museum of Wildlife Art. 25 January, Thursday
Dog Sled Adventures with Maria Hayashida. 7-8 p.m. Jackson resident Maria Hayashida shares the inside track on dog sled racing, mountain climbing and retracing the original Iditarod dog-sled route in Alaska during this program for families with children ages 6 and up. Hayashida will bring her dog sled and winter survival gear along for the ride. Cost: Free. Location: Ordway Auditorium. Contact: Youth Services, 733-2164 ext. 103.

29 January, Monday
Steve Dunbar: Big Science at the End of the Earth. 7-8 p.m. Find out why the South Pole is the only place on earth where you can hear the planet’s core rotate or why it might be the best place to see neutrinos, as Antarctic veteran Steve Dunbar explains major scientific research underway in Antarctica. Y.E.L.P. – Young Extremely Literary People. 4-5 p.m. Young Extremely Literary People in grades six to 12 gather for this monthly book club to learn about the latest new young adult titles and share great reads. Tuesday 10:05–10:25 a.m. and 10:35–10:55 a.m.; Thursday 10:05–10:25 a.m. Offered three times a week, the library’s 20-minute Toddler Time for children ages 3 and younger features books, songs, finger plays and flannel board acts. Family Discovery Night: Tracking Penguins in Antarctica. 7-8 p.m. Researcher Donna Patterson-Fraser tracks Antarctic birds from Southern Giant Petrels to Adelie Penguins to see how human activities affect these species. Fraser explains her findings with colorful slides and examples of bird bones, eggs, bird bands, nest rocks and much more. 10 February, Saturday
Penguins and Climate Warming: A Global Message from Antarctica. 7-8 p.m. President of Polar Oceans Research Group, Bill Fraser, provides a detailed look at the life and ecology of three Antarctic penguin species – Adelie, Gentoo and Chinstrap. These species offer some of the best evidence available of climate change in Antarctica and how these changes influence ecosystems. Cost: Free. Location: Ordway Auditorium. 15 February, Thursday
Stories from “The Ice.” 7:30-8:30 p.m. Curious about life in Antarctica? Teton County residents share first-hand accounts of their experiences on “On the Ice” – giving us a glimpse of the world’s hardest-to-visit continent. Cost: Free. Location: Ordway Auditorium. 22 February, Thursday
Kelly Tyler-Lewis: “The Lost Men.” 7-8 p.m. Shackleton’s survival story is legendary, but few know the astonishing story of the Ross Sea party, the support crew he dispatched to the opposite side of Antarctica. Cambridge historian and author of “The Lost Men,” Kelly Tyler-Lewis tells of the 10-man party’s plight after the men became stranded on the world’s most inhospitable continent while sledging 1,700 miles across Antarctica to supply Shackleton’s aborted mission.
