  • I would like to see more quiet spaces - so I can bring in my own laptop and find a nice cozy spot - like a sofa with an arm extension to hold my laptop!  Thanks!

  • We need a quiet reading room.  The 3:00 school teens are very disruptive.  They need a place away from quiet reading area.

  • How about a reading room with a fireplace and comfortable chairs and tables? Maybe some footrests? With lots of windows to see outdoors.

Jacob commented on 10/26  at  04:41 PM
  • I like Tommy’s idea about a fireplace - this would make for a great spot to read the paper & magazines.

  • I see tne need for more spaces to plug in a laptop and get some work done. It is crowded during certain times of the day, and can be difficult to find an available spot with an outlet.

  • How about three zones to accomodate various levels of noise?  1) The quietest zone to be the most removed to respect the desire for calm. 2) Allow folks to talk with library voices in the stacks and reading room and 3) Acknowledge the loudest areas and work with it - sound deflectors… This honors all patrons need for library space whether it is to study or socialize.

  • A couple of comments here:

    1. the telephone in the Information center used by the employees has the LOUDEST ringtong, and is intrusive through out the library when it rings!

    2. the overall tone of this particular library is louder than most libraries….glad one is not yelled at for talking, but the tolerance level is too high.  Recommend there are ‘noise or talking areas’ in the library, BUT that they are off to the side and the ‘exceptions’, NOT the rule!

    3. Sure you have heard this before, but will repeat this, the kids section is too close to the reading room—supposedly one of the quieter sections of the library.  If the kids area could be divided off (pocket doors or french doors) when there is high usage in the kids area, or place in more ‘remote’ section of the library, would help tone down the too high of noise level.

  • Workspace with more room that still has outlets for laptops.  Possibly more rooms for study/work instead of for movies, conferences, etc.  Quiet space that eliminates rooms used for movies (entertainment), cell phone use, and business meetings.  Shield noise from Children’s Area to rest of library.

  • Libraries are thoughtful places.  Rules for cell phones should be strictly enforced.

Jim commented on 11/07  at  12:38 PM
  • There should be a comfortable outdoor area.  People in this community value the outdoors, and if that could be incorporated into the plan, that would be awesome.  A courtyard, or a large covered porch area (like at the Visitor’s Center in GTNP, or at the LSR preserve in GTNP), or a gazebo space.  Maybe a quiet porch, and then another one for children’s activities near the Children’s area for outdoor projects/messy art.  The porch at the LSR is perfect because in the winter, the sun reaches in under the porch which doesn’t have any snow on it, because it’s covered.  Awesome outdoor space!

  • It’s a noisy place—can we isolate the noise? I don’t want to have to go to a special room to have it be quiet—it is a library.

Can we isolate the noise? If the noise was contained it would solve all the other issues.

Betty commented on 11/07  at  06:08 PM
  • I want the library to be mostly quiet. I know children need to be noisy but can’t we find a way when we add on to keep the noise confined to the children’s area? I like knowing I can come to the library and find a place to come and cozy up to a book and get lost in it’s magic for awhile. Please don’t turn our library into a rec center. We already have one of those. Thank you for giving us a chance to comment on this important topic.

  • I second the nooks and whatnot for reading- like an old bookstore (Boulder bookstore on pearl st., anyone?) with small spaces where one can sit on the floor (or something cozier) and lose hours of time… Another possibility is “pods” (study carrels) like a college campus building where one can focus with an exclusive space for periods of time.

  • About Sitting/Reading Space:
    -Cozy reading space
-Comfort (bean bag chairs) costly – space wasting.  Attracts sleepers – not a living room.  Reading space is not for comfort – its for reading and study.
-Living room type space.  Comfy seating, windows to outside, quiet reading area
-“Living room” distinct from quiet areas for adults
-Reading room with great views and not cluttered with lots of materials – mainly windows, chairs, small tables – more of an open living room feel.
-More big windows to take advantage of views.
-Indoor/outdoor interface is important.  Lots of seating near windows with view.
-Low windows might not work well with all of our snow.  Might end up staring at snow bank.
-Like to feel the outdoors inside!
    -No fireplaces
-Love fireplaces! This library feels cold much of the time.
-A second story is always more quiet – divide moving space and sitting space
    -No modules, thank you
    -Nooks for reading or computers
    -Window seats – nooks
-Lots of flexible kinds of seating – different kinds of chairs – bean bags, cool built-in bench, comfortable seats on wheels, chairs with armrests throughout library, hammocks?
-Movable sculpture furniture – inside and outside
    -Love the seated music stations/seats
-Listening stations?  Entertainment? Proper library functions.
    -Reading niches appropriate
    - Variety of seating options – some private, some group, some view, etc.
-Variety of reading areas – formal, informal, nooks, natural light
    - Like shelves used to define space.  Shelves that look like bookstore.  Shelving that creates rooms or spaces.

-Retain quiet, study rooms (enclosed type)
-Table space wonderful in front of big window
-Study rooms need windows, quiet, but open and visible
-Want comfortable chairs with good lighting – too many areas are too dark for comfortable reading
-Try random types of study spaces
-Is carpet a better option anywhere in a library – noise?
    -Acoustic separation
-Lots of study/reading spaces around the edges of the building, near windows
    -Like door-less quiet study areas
    -Like mini-cubical study nooks
    -Tiny quiet space with glass
-Quiet study areas throughout the library

-Multiple uses of space – great concept
    -Like windows in meeting rooms
-A larger meeting space would be good.  It needs flexible setup – could be used for laptop work area at other times
    -Comfy chairs and collaborative spaces
    -More casual meeting areas
-Small business incubator? Small group rooms – professional meeting areas
-Booths for adults in a non-quiet area
    -Discussion booths
-Like booths if they can accommodate decent numbers
-Booth seating (maybe spread out in library)
    -Need a nice conference space
-Group meeting room areas throughout the library
-Tech out all meeting rooms – audio, whiteboards, document cameras
-Need technology in group study rooms
-Meeting rooms – love windows and transparency
-Group table for book clubs and meetings, if somewhat flexible for moving
-Need multiple small group study rooms for 2-4 people
-Coffee shops are crowded and noisy places to meet.  A nice space to have a meeting or gathering would be appreciated
-Library=Community Center. Distinct from Center for the Arts not competing for attention.

  • Yes.  The library has become quite noisy.  I would prefer that noise be segregated and the main library be quiet, but as this seems unlikely, how about a few small quiet cubicles with doors that close, good lighting and a reasonably large table or desk? This would approximate the spaces library staff now have to do their work; serious library users need the same.

  • Yes.  I rarely feel comfortable staying in the library.  I would like more somewhat private, casual feeling, enclosed spaces to read/study art books and creative materials that is separate from main traffic areas.  Comfortable seating, good lighting with space on desk or table tops to spread out material, quiet and secluded.

  • There should definitely be more quiet/study space—perhaps a few more study rooms located far away from the rooms where people can watch DVDs and videos.  The walls in those rooms are not soundproof and it makes it hard to study near a room where people are watching tv.

  • Fireplace is not very “green” and is very energy inefficient.  Dragging wood into the building is very dirty.  Passive solar like current reading area is energy efficient and very pleasant. Reading area should be pleasant, but does not need to be fancy.  Need to segregate uses, especially quiet uses from noisier ones.  Study rooms see a lot of use, flexible space would be useful.  Small rooms are a bit close for 2 people, big rooms are too much for 2 people.  Rooms that are compartmentalized to allow bigger groups but can be closed off for multiple small groups would be useful.  It needs to be simple to change size as the demand changes all the time. Do not add a Television area with news broadcasts.  I go there to read, not to listen to the news.  There are very few places to go to escape the omnipresent television.

  • The library in its current configuration looks like a computer center.  Quiet desk space is lacking and keeps many people above 30 years old away.  It feels more like an information center than a place to study, ie- read, write and research.  There also seems to be wasted open space up front.

Linda G commented on 11/17  at  04:14 PM
  • One of the reasons I frequent the library so much is that I do a lot of my work here.  I provide private business assistance to individuals and small businesses so often use the Wyoming Statute books, do research on the internet, research informational manual, books, etc.  As a result, there are times I really need to focus and concentrate on what I’m doing.  Not always an easy task at this library.  I’ve never understood why the open floor plan was chosen (why such a tall ceiling instead of two floors to house more books/work space?) when the library was built, but I don’t doubt there were valid reasons.  But when renovating, could we please have an actual room, with walls and and a door, that is for absolute quiet and serious study? Never in my life have I been in another library that didn’t have a viable quiet area.  I’ve reserved and used the study rooms, but frankly (and no insult intended to the builder) the walls are very thin and definitely do not keep out the sound of movies being played in the next room.  Please, some quiet for when we need it.  And please, also, not a room that needs to be reserved.  If we’re all quiet, we should be able to share a larger space.

I read a few of the posted comments and one individual had stated something to the effect that while the library was indeed a community center, it was not meant to be a recreation center.  With that thought, I most heartily agree.  However…and I hope you take the following in the spirit in which it is written…there are ever more increasing numbers of our fellow citizens who have had misfortune befall them in one form or another.  Many are out of work.  Many use the library as a place to spend the day in order to still feel industrious (reading all day), a place to get in out of the cold (some truly don’t have a home), or a place to look for a job (internet/newspaper) and work on resumes.  Still others use the library for community.  I do think that an area (the day-longers generally seem to congregate in the magazine reading area and internet sections) for social discourse and interactions is a must (after all, payment is required at the Red Center), but a small distance away from those trying to read or study.  The jobless are not the only loud folks by any means, just more noticeable due to the length of their stays.  Occasional outbursts of greetings, etc. are understandable, but long, loud conversations…Can no the majority of the library be a library and not a social center? Or again, at least provide quiet areas for reading and study that are marked and enforced accordingly? And perhaps may there be more air circulation in defense of the aroma of campers? Sorry, but I had to put that in.

You are all wonderful, this is just my wish list.  Thank you.

  • I think it would be very nice to have a quiet study space.  At the same, that could backfire on you because kids may start goofing off and vandalising the rooms.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:26 PM
  • Study pods like little circle places with closed doors.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:35 PM
  • I would love a study pod and also those egg chairs.  Also fireplaces and a snack bar.  And lots of conversation areas with many bean bags and couches.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:40 PM
  • Separate little places and a part for each student.  Ex: each spot has its own chair, lamp, desk, divider

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:43 PM
  • Big windows.  Round tables with 4 seats.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:47 PM
  • -Cozy and comfortable
    -Separate conversation and study areas
    -Located away from Children’s area
-Big windows and natural light (good lighting)
    -Very funky and retro

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:50 PM
  • The study place needs to be quieter, bigger windows, and “warm” colors (red, yellow, brown, etc.)  It’s not quiet at all!

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:55 PM
  • A quiet study space with sick chairs and comfy couches.  Maybe sky lights.  Little rooms for studying.  Glass walls to see out of.  More computers letting more people in.  Egg chairs.  Make it a lot bigger.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  02:56 PM
  • Yes, I’d like to have somewhere when everyone can work.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  04:12 PM

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  04:37 PM
  • Yes, I think you should put in little study booths with comfortable chairs and a desk.  The booth should be sound proof and have speakers so you can plug in an iPod.  The doors should be all glass and very moderny.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  04:41 PM
  • Individual cubicles for studying/homework/reading.  (Some sort of private secluded place.)  Group homework/study areas with room for multiple binders/books.  Not crowded.  Sound proof computer rooms so needed conversation or music can be possible.  Computers not in rows.  (See drawing.)

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  04:43 PM
  • -Quiet
    -No loud little kids

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  05:03 PM
  • I think of a study space like a cool little room/pod - with a desk and some comfy chairs.  Kind of a quiet cozy space.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  05:19 PM
  • Yes I like quiet/study places. I think they should have a blocked off area for teens who need to study.

  • Cool chairs (eggish chairs). Separate room to talk in.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  11:20 PM
  • There should be a decent sized room towards the back where there is a separate place where people can be in a quiet zone.  In this space there should be little cubicle desk type things.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  11:24 PM
  • A loft that looks like a tree.  Lots of natural colored billowy couches.

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  11:28 PM
  • Three rooms - one for child, one for teen, and one for adult

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  11:37 PM
  • Background music in study rooms

From Middle School commented on 11/19  at  11:46 PM
  • A nice little comfortable bean bag facing a small table would be nice to do homework on.  Instead of sitting on a hard chair and hard table!  If you know what I mean.

From Middle School commented on 11/20  at  12:01 AM
  • Study pods would be awesome and egg chairs with speakers and computers would be a dream come true.  I love modern furniture and to be able to come to the library and relax while doing my homework is AWESOME.

From Middle School commented on 11/20  at  12:12 AM
  • We could maybe get five or six study pods and have better tables, comfy chairs and encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, calculators, rulers, pencils, colored pencils, extra paper and glue.

From Middle School commented on 11/20  at  12:15 AM
  • Outside with glass walls with fresh open windows.

From High School commented on 11/22  at  01:43 AM
  • Comfy chairs and bean bags.  Somewhere with access outdoors.

From paper comment form commented on 11/22  at  01:45 AM
  • Quiet space where writers/researchers could reserve desk for 1 week intervals.

From High School commented on 11/22  at  01:47 AM
  • Add comfy chairs and tables.  Also, possibly healthy snacks? Move kiddie room to a different section of the library or turn the larger room (the one on your right when you enter) into a study room on Mon., Wed. and Thurs.

From High School commented on 11/22  at  01:48 AM
  • I don’t know where it should be located but I would like it to be quiet, but not real quiet.  Maybe have a Ipod player so people can put music on.  I would like it to be peaceful.  With bean bag couches, lazy boy chairs.

  • Language lab with Rosetta Stone.  More computers.

From high school commented on 11/22  at  01:51 AM

  • No…that’s what the rest of the library is for.

From high school commented on 11/22  at  01:55 AM
  • It should look like hogwarts….or a tree house.

From high school commented on 11/22  at  01:56 AM
  • That would be nice.  Fireplaces are really expensive and rather dangerous in a library, but it really adds a good feeling.  Maybe a fake one?  Also the big gushy chairs are pretty much a favorite for studying.

From high school commented on 11/22  at  01:57 AM
  • -Comfortable chairs and a lot of desk space
-Would be nice if quiet music was played
-Should have nonfiction books and primary sources in shelves along the wall (should be sorted by topic)

From High School commented on 11/22  at  02:28 AM
  • Not a quiet study space, but like a chill hang out spot with bean bags, couches, pillows all layed out on the floor.  But have enough for a lot of students.

JHHS commented on 11/22  at  10:31 PM

  • It should be comfy and not just with chairs, with a table.

  • Light soft colors, blue colors.  In a far corner away from the child’s section.  May be abstract art on walls.
