Freedom For Speech

About a month ago, a patron requested that the library reconsider a children’s book on geology.  The concern of the patron was that the book contained material about the subject of creationism alongside information about the geologic formation of the earth.  I have to commend the patron because they were taking the time to examine their grandchildren’s choices in reading.  I wholeheartedly support each parent’s, grandparent’s or other caregiver’s right and responsibility to be involved with their children’s reading.

As a public library, it is the job of librarians to present all sides on a topic.  So, although an individual may or may not agree with the subject of creationism, this material is there for parents who do wish to inform their children on this topic.  Similarly, there are other children’s geology books without this subject for parents who are not interested in creationism. As a librarian, I do not place a value on either side of the issue; I simply provide materials to support parents in teaching their children.

The second freedom of speech event I found myself defending was the choice of a notable and sometimes controversial speaker for a Fourth of July event in Teton Valley, Idaho.  The choice caused quite a stir.  I heard from many people who were upset about the choice and who thought it was inappropriate to have this person speak at this event.  What I did was to question people about whether they would be equally upset if a speaker from the other side of the fence was on the slate.  I also challenged people to consider that the Fourth of July is a celebration of our country establishing a unique set of declarations that set us apart.  Among those declarations is the freedom for speech, even speech we disagree with.  To me, the point was not whether I liked the viewpoint of the speaker, but that I support his right to speak freely.

Both events reminded me of what makes me proud about our country—our stand for democracy is profound and unprecedented in our world!
