Your Library, Your Input

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Wow! I read so many great ideas from you about the library’s proposed addition.  Sorting through the nearly 900 comments has been delightful and educational. I’ve heard how deeply our community values the many services the library provides.
It’s been reaffirming to hear the resounding calls for more books, even as I know we need to add technology.  I’ve been excited to hear the demand for creating a real space for our teens.  And I know how much our patrons need places for study and quiet reading in a busy world — you said that over and over.
I noticed a number of common threads in the comments:
• More space for books!
• Better shelving and lighting for books
• Create more flexible program spaces
• Larger community room
• Better seating and sound for program spaces
• Create different zones in the library — quiet zones, “library voice” zones and social zones
• More group study rooms
• Add more computers & bandwidth
• More places to plug in computers
• Need quiet technology zones & “buzz” friendly technology zones
• Give teens their own space — a place to study and to be noisy, with cool furniture
At the same time, I heard people express completely opposite opinions, such as add a fireplace and no fireplace, or add a cafe and no food allowed.
The challenge now is to incorporate your comments in a reasonable way into the design of a library that will meet the needs of our current and future community.
You will see the beginnings of that design at the next set of public forums on December 14 and 16.
See you there,
Deb
