7-8 p.m. Author of the memoir Live Through This, Debra Gwartney talks about the shape of the memoir; gives ideas about shaping a life story into a compelling, engaging piece of prose; and offers exercises to get started on this challenging work. 1-4 p.m. Fri.; 10 a.m.-noon Sat.; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sun. Join author Debra Gwartney for this three-day, memoir-writing workshop. Explore how to shape family anecdotes, dates, and facts into a compelling and engaging narrative, whether for publication or for a personal library. Look at models of successful memoirs; engage in exercises to stir memory; practice writing and critique fellow participants 5-8 page stories. Gwartney is the author of the memoir, Live Through This (2009), related to the story of her relationship with her daughters broadcast on This American Life. She teaches nonfiction writing at Portland State University and lives in Oregon with her husband, writer Barry Lopez. Space is limited!
