Jackson, WY – Alta residents will unwrap an early holiday gift this year when the new Alta Branch Library opens its doors on Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
“This building project represents a community dream realized to a large degree by Alta residents themselves,” said Deb Adams, Library Director. “The community here has been hugely supportive and proactive in the entire process. In addition, the library is so appreciative of the many years of cooperation from the Teton County School District and the Alta Elementary School, where the library was housed for more than 40 years. I can’t wait for everyone to see the new library in its full glory and to enjoy using it.”
The construction crew on the building project broke ground in May 2009 for the new branch library, with the goal to open in December 2009. “The architects and construction crew have done an outstanding job with the project and we’re right on schedule getting ready to open our doors,” said library Facility Manager Dail Barbour.
Since August 2008, the Alta Branch Library has been housed in a bookmobile, located in the Alta Elementary School parking lot. The bookmobile will be permanently closed on Friday, November 13 so that library staff can focus on getting the shelves, books, computers, and other materials moved into the new building. During the roughly two week transition period of November 13-30, patrons are asked to hold onto their library materials during which time no overdue fines will accrue.
Beginning December 1, the hours for the new Alta Branch Library will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 12 - 6 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. A grand opening celebration is planned for early January 2010, and storytimes will resume in February.
The Alta Branch Library is an extension of the Teton County Library in Jackson, Wyoming. The new Alta Branch Library is located adjacent to the Alta Elementary School and St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church, across from the Teton Teepee Lodge in Alta. Alta Branch Library circulates books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs and videotapes for adults and children with access to materials from the main branch in Jackson. Computers with Internet access, word processing and Spanish language capabilities are available to the public.
