Biography Resource Center – Great for biography projects, students can get facts on individuals (from Michael Jackson to Molly Brown) or search by category (Scientists, Presidents, Hispanic Americans, Scientists, etc). This database draws on books, magazine, and news articles, and links to reliable web resources on each subject.
CultureGrams offers a fun way to get a well-rounded view of countries around the world and various American states. Focusing on South American countries this fall? Read about culture, geography, politics, and history from each, then watch short videos, review a photo gallery, and choose a common recipe to make as a class (all countries available in “kids” or 8-12 version). Each state is also reviewed in the CultureGrams States Edition, including history, people, flags, climate, and more.
Oxford Reference – Access encyclopedias on all manner of subject from school or home. If you’re asking students to complete papers and projects without citing internet resources, here is a happy medium: these reference books from Oxford University are easily accessible and reliable!
CollegeSource—Students can review catalogs and course descriptions for over 44,000 colleges and universities and find quick facts for various schools like tuition, number of students, and accreditation.
Amazing Animals – Searchable magazines and encyclopedias on an enormous list of birds and animals, as well as more general subjects. There is also an extensive curriculum list that can be browsed by k-12 grade level. A few examples are “A Frog’s Life,” “Baseball in America,” and “Family Heritage.” Most lesson plans include objectives, vocabulary, activities, discussions, and readings.
Opposing Viewpoints is an extensive collection of resources on controversial issues. Topics range from Global Warming to Cloning to Same Sex Marriage and everything in between. This would be smart place to start a research paper or a debate topic, with lists of various viewpoints, reference material, news articles, opinion pieces, and statistics all displayed side-by-side.
Issues and Controversies provides overviews of topics you’ll find in today’s headlines like hybrid cars, healthcare, and the economic stimulus plan.
Issues and Controversies in American History reviews controversial topics in our nation’s history like the Indian Removal Act, the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Civil Rights and the Cold War.
*Both of these have a curriculum section with discussion questions, activities, and ideas.

CQ Researcher—offers in-depth, non-biased coverage of today’s most important issues. Each weekly issue provides up-to-date information on controversial subjects written by CQ’s staff of experienced reporters.
Grolier’s Amazing Animals—information on animals, describing their habitat, food sources, life cycles and wonderful photos. Lesson plans for educators and games for kids are additional features of this site.
EBSCO MasterFILE Premier—designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for almost 1,700 general reference publications dating as far back as 1975. EBSCO covers many subject areas of general interest.
EBSCO Middle Search Plus—provides full text for nearly 140 popular magazines for middle and high school research. Biographies, primary source documents and an image collection are features of this database. All full text articles are assigned a Lexile.
EBSCO Primary Search—provides full text for nearly 70 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.
EBSCO Teacher Reference Center – indexes and abstracts to more than 270 journals and magazines for educators.
EBSCO Student Research CenterTM—designed especially for youth in grades 6-12. Searching can be tailored to Lexile reading level and interest areas. Resources included are magazines, reference works, newspapers, biographies, radio and TV news transcripts, primary source documents, photos, maps, flags, and film and video sources.
eLibrary—contains more than 1,000 full-text magazines, newspapers, books, and transcripts—plus thousands of maps, pictures, Web links and audio/video files.
eLibrary Elementary—tailors all the media types and search functionality of eLibrary for the young reader.
Encyclopædia Britannica Online—complete encyclopedia, a dictionary, and the annual Year in Review. The version listed here is more comprehensive than the free site.
ERIC —The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, produces the world’s premier database of journal and non-journal education literature.
Facts on File Issues & Controversies—in-depth articles on more than 800 hot topics in business, politics, government, education and popular culture. Special features include editorial cartoons, National High School Debate Topics, and curriculum tools for both students and educators.
Facts on File Issues & Controversies in American History—provides the background, outcomes, and contemporary points of view for the major topics in American history.
Facts on File Today’s Science—explains important developments in biology, chemistry, the environment, space, physics, and technology. An encyclopedia, glossary, curriculum tools and images are additional features.
LearningExpress Library—provides a completely interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help students succeed on the academic tests.
Literature Resource Center—contains biographical, bibliographical, and critical content about literature and literary figures. LRC includes the contents of Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism Select and Dictionary of Literary Biography. Find analyses of authors and their works from every age and literary discipline.
NoveList—if you’ve ever wondered “What do I read next?“, or tried to find another book like one by your favorite author, this database will help you just as a favorite librarian.
NoveList K-8—a database that guides the user to fiction authors and titles, designed especially for elementary and middle schools.
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center – bringing together information on social issues via pro and con viewpoint articles, reference articles that provide context, full-text magazines, academic journals, and newspapers, primary source documents, government and organizational statistics, multimedia, and links to web sites.
