Library Creates New Hub for Information and Technology

Jackson, WY - On January 22, 2008, Teton County Library will combine its Computer Center and Information Desk into a single information and technology hub to enhance services to patrons. This move is in direct response to community input received during the library's 2006-2010 Strategic Planning process, where community members requested more computer, Internet and technology services. The newly configured space will be centrally located behind the current Information Desk. This one-stop shop for information expertise will boast additional Internet computers and highly-trained library staff to assist with technological and information needs.

"As the search for information becomes increasingly electronic and technologically-based, it makes sense to combine our information and computer service points," said Public Services Manager Suzanne Morlock. "Library staff will also be able to better integrate their high levels of expertise in both technology and research."

A physical reconfiguration will make the new Computer and Information Center more visible and convenient to find for library users and visitors. The former Computer Center, located in the southwest corner of the building, will be cleared of computers and wires and converted into study space with comfortable chairs and carrels.

The library will keep pace with technology by providing public access to in-demand computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint 2007. Tech-savvy staff will be on hand to assist patrons with these electronic tools and provide research expertise. For instance, library staff could help a patron with cabin fever to locate travel guidebooks, a list of potential hotels and airline schedules. Then, that patron could use an Internet computer to book their own reservation online.

A fully loaded "super" computer will offer software for patrons to convert documents to PDF (portable document format) files with Adobe Acrobat Standard, edit pictures with Adobe Photoshop Elements, and translate documents into Spanish or English with WordMagic translator. The "super" computer and a second word processor also feature resume-writing programs and typing tutorials. The new layout will centralize support services, such as printing, photocopying and test proctoring for distance education students.
The Computer and Information Center move and redesign helps the library go forward with one of its New Year's resolutions - a facilities planning goal also defined in the library's 2006-2010 Strategic Plan. An in-depth facilities analysis, completed in February 2007, determined future needs for the remodeling and expansion of current space. To learn more about the library's strategic goals, read the plan on the library's home page at TCLib.org.

"The reconfiguration is the first step in the library's facilities planning process," said Facilities Manager Dail Barbour. "Combining computer and information services is an important part of that project, by continuing our efforts to maximize our current space."
