The Songs

Back by popular demand, The Aimless Drifters band, featuring pickin’ buckaroos Michael Hurwitz, Jerry Linn and Tommy Broderick, perform “prairie blues,” a unique blend of blues and country music. Following the music, enjoy cake, coffee, hot chocolate and tea.

Hurwitz is a Wyoming based singer-songwroter with a style somewhere between the delta blues and western cowboy swing. With high plains ranching roots going back four generations, he started cowboyin’ at an early age. Long days in the saddle, haying, branding calves and fixing fence taught him the value of hard work, good horses and friends, and a love for the land and its history.

When he picked up the guitar at 13, he learned the old cowboy songs his Dad sang, and the southern country blues from his Mississippi Mother, incorporating them and other styles into the musical gumbo he calls “prairie blues.”

The cake itself is an event which draws an audience. Each year folks are guessing whether the cake will be almond poppy seed, carrot cake or chocolate. We call it ‘Virginia’s Cake’ since it’s made by our talented baker and library assistant, Virginia Grosse. Gretchen Notzold
