Part One
Misinformation is not a new phenomenon, but the pervasiveness of social media has changed its reach. Join Dr. Brunner, professor at Idaho State University, in a discussion about the historical overview of misinformation campaigns in the US, how they arise, and their impact on politics. Together we'll examine examples of tactics individuals and organizations use to make misinformation appear authentic, and end with tips and tricks for spotting misinformation. Part Two
Governments have long used media to communicate with constituents, promote their party and sway voters. Increasingly, governments and people are utilizing social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instragram to influence democracies via misinformation campaigns directed at voters. We'll explore how countries like China and Russia have deployed social media to influence elections and disrupt American democracy. image of betsy brunnerDr. Betsy Brunner (PhD, University of Utah) is a media scholar who studies the use of social media in creating social change is author of the book, Environmental Activism, Social Media and Protest in China, as well as essays and chapters on social media, protest, and environmental activism. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants.  In the fall of 2019, Dr. Brunner was a research fellow at the Communication University of China in Beijing.
